Everything I Have Read During My (way-too-long) HiatusʉϬ

Hello there!

Well oops it has been a minute since I posted 🙈 I got busy with my PhD, which caused me to sit by a computer for such long hours that my brain couldn’t handle blogging on top of that. I’m still working on the PhD (and the horrid deadline is getting real close yikes) so I’ll probably still pop in and out – but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about blogging and couldn’t resist to jump in again 🥰

Long story short – I’m back! How are you all? Let me know what you have been up to this year!

I have been on a long reading slump this year, but over the past few weeks it has finally started to clear. In this post, I get to talk about the books I have read so far this year and overall how I’m doing with my reading challenges 😎 Let’s jump in!

Progress on 2022 Reading Challenges

I have read 37 books in 2022 so far, which means that I’m behind from my yearly reading goal of 67 books. I’m 8 books behind the schedule, but I’m not giving up yet! I have made it through 37 books regardless of my reading slump, and now that it is starting to clear, I have high hopes that I’ll manage to zoom through the remaining 30 books before the year ends.

Screenshot from Goodreads 2022 Reading Challenge. An orange logo of a book and a progress bar which says: 37 books completed, 8 books behind schedule, 37/67 (55%)

In addition to the yearly challenge, I have a couple reading resolutions, a TBR of 5-star predictions and I’m taking part in Caro @ Bookcheshirecat’s Out of Your Comfort Zone – reading challenge.

Reading Resolutions 2022

Read More by Authors of Colour.

Last year I managed to read 43.42% from authors of colour, and this year I’m hoping to reach that 50%! Here’s how I’m doing so far:

Pie chart saying how many books by authors of colour I have read in 2022. The pie is split into two, 56.8% of White authors and 43.2% of Authors of Colour

So far, 43.2% of the books I have read have been from authors of colour and 56.8% from white authors. I think it will be fairly easy to pick up more books by authors of colour in the latter half of 2022, I have some really great ones waiting!

Read in My Native Language.

Last year I managed to read 3 books in Finnish, and this year my goal is to get to 4! This year I have only managed to read 2 so far, but there is still time to get to two more. More importantly, the Finnish books that I have read have been amazing – and one of them is by my big sister 🥰

2022 TBR

My 2022 TBR has 10 books that I think I’ll give 5 stars to. See this post to see more about the books and why I picked them. I ended up making one slight change to this list by replacing Oathbringer with the Final Empire (both by Brandon Sanderson). I have been reading the Way of Kings series but I recently learned that I should have read Mistborn first!! So before moving forwards with the Way of Kings, I’m going to be starting Mistborn instead. I strongly believe that The Final Empire should turn out to be a five star too!

So far, I have made it through only 3 books on the list and I’m currently reading the fourth😅

A list of my 2022 Tbr of 5 star predictions. The list has book covers: A Prayer for the Crown-shy by Becky Chambers (unread), The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty (unread), Oathbringer switched into The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (unread), Starsight by Brandon Sanderson (read, 4.5 stars), A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark (read, 2 stars), Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller (unread), When The Tiger comes down the mountain by Nghi Vo (unread), On Earth We are briefly gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (currently reading), Notes from the burning age (unread), Daughter of Moon Gooddess (read, 5 stars)

Out of these three read books, one turned out to be 2-star (A Master of Djinn), one was a 5-star read (Daughter of the Moon Goddess), and the final one was a 4.5 star read (Starsight). Not a great success percentage so far, but I have to say that Daughter of the Moon Goddess was fantastic. Also, I’m really excited to read all of the others on this list too!

Out of your comfort zone reading challenge

As part of the Out of Your Comfort Zone -reading challenge I hope to read 20 books outside from my comfort zone:

  • Middle Grade – 1 book read
  • Thriller/Horror/Suspense – 1 book read
  • Non-memoir nonfiction – 3 books read
  • Sci-fi – 5 books read
  • Literary fiction – 3 books read

Here are all of my genres read so far this year:

A picture of a bar graph showing counts of different book genres read so far in 2022. First up is fantasy, then scifi, then literary fiction, nonfiction, memoir, historical fiction, magical realism, romance and finally, thriller.

Definitely mostly fantasy (as always hehe) but I have branched out a bit with the help of the reading challenge! In total I have made it through 13 books outside of my comfort zone, which means I’m more than halfway there for 20 🥳

I have also managed to get some badges!

  • Traveler badge for reading 10 books outside of my comfort zone
  • Hidden gem badge for finding a new favourite book (actually multiple!)
  • Listener badge for listening to an audiobook

That’s it for the challenge updates, let’s jump into the books woopwoop!

Those are all of the books I have read in 2022 so far! Did you see any that you have read too? Or any that are on your TBR? Let me know in the comments!

Although my PhD stuff has eaten into my reading time and I have been stuck in a loop of reading slumps, the books that I have managed to pick up this year have been pretty great! I haven’t had a single one-star yet (fingers crossed it stays that way!), and I have come across 8 five-star books. I’m hoping to make more time for blogging and reading in the rest of the year!

Thank you so much for reading!
