✨ First Blog-versary, Giveaway + The Liebster Award✨

Hello my fellow bookaholics!

A week and a year ago I set up The Bookaholic Dreamer and wrote my first ever blogpost, a Newbie Tag with a bunch of gifs and distasteful, awkward jokes. I wanted to have a channel in which to share my love of books so that I could stop exhausting my partner and friends with all the endless TBRs, wrap-ups and recommendations my mind was full of. It felt like a brave but lonely decision; I was certain that I would have a lot of fun writing posts about books but I also knew that no one would ever stumble across this place. Until you suddenly did. And it wasn’t lonely anymore. Instead, I suddenly was able to join in on the community that I was a big fan of. I was welcomed into a world full of fellow bookaholics.

It can be quite lonely in the world even when you are surrounded by family and friends. For me this was because of my intense bookish-ness. While I could get my partner to read some of my favourite books, he wouldn’t go quite as hyped about new releases or book covers as I would. Many people around me meant to be kind, but they also told me that I should be on a pub crawl instead of reading on a Friday night, and that I should downsize my bookshelves or get rid off editions I love. What made me lonely, was a complete lack of people who would fully understand my love for books. People to whom I could talk about Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman and who wouldn’t need a backstory about the brilliantness of the Illuminae Files. Or people who know the feeling when you are asked what you did the day before and you want to respond that you were fighting dragons, solving a murder mystery or falling in love in a space ship. Now I have all of you.

Thank you for being there.

I wanted to celebrate this one-year birthday somehow here in the blog in addition to giving this monologue that caused me to ugly cry for 20 minutes. First of all, there will be a giveaway! I have never done one of these before so I’m quite nervous 😬 At the bottom of this blogpost you will find a Rafflecopter and some instructions, and you could win £15 worth of books from Wordery. The giveaway is not sponsored by anyone but my own warmth-filled heart and thin wallet, and the giveaway is open for anyone to whom Wordery ships to (INT).

To celebrate, I also wanted to do something that I haven’t done in a while but love doing; a tag! Bibi @ Bibi’s Book Blog kindly tagged me at the Liebster Award recently. Thank you so much Bibi! You should check out her blog, she not only does amazing tag posts but also great reviews, giveaways and discussions!

The Liebster Award

Liebster Award

THE RULES:

  1. Acknowledge the blog that gave it to you and display the award
  2. Answer 11 questions that the blogger gives you
  3. Give 11 random facts about yourself (as this post is already so long, I’ll skip this part 😊 )
  4. Nominate 11 blogs and notify them of their nomination
  5. Give these blogs 11 questions to answer

Questions from Bibi:

What’s one thing people often say, that rubs you the wrong way?

Uuu we are going straight to the piping hot tea 🍵 My number one most hated thing that people tell me is that I will change my mind about not wanting to have children 😤 I’m married, so people tend to ask me quite often about when my partner and I will have children. Not only do I hate the question itself (I think they should ask whether we want kids or not, instead of when do we want them), but most of all, I hate that when I say that I don’t want any, the person responds “not yet” or “you will change your mind”.

I hear this often from slightly older women who tend to think that my opinions are a part of a temporary rebellion against our abusive society. However, by assuming that, they do not give the appropriate weight to my words and thus silence me as a young woman. Usually (in my momentary anger) I point out that the asker would never say the same to a woman of my age who wants to have children. Therefore, they end up not giving weight to my opinion simply because it doesn’t happen to allign with their values.

This perfectly sums up my feelings on this

What’s your favourite hot beverage?

Hmmm coffee maybe! I love to drink filter coffee made with light roast coffee beans on a chemex.

The savior of all mornings

But there’s a contestant for chemex coffee: a hot cocktail I had at Christmas a couple years ago. It was a gingerbread flavoured hot cocktail and it was heavenly. I have yet to find it again though, even after marching to the same cocktail bar and praying them to make it again for me (they didn’t remember how).

Who’s your celebrity crush?

My girl-crush is most definitely Cassey Ho from Blogilates. She does pilates videos on Youtube and she also has her own active wear store called Popflex (I love her leggings so much, I basically live in them). Cassey is simply a kind, optimistic powerhouse. She is strong, passionate and intelligent. She inspires me all the time and I love doing her fitness videos simply because she is so motivating. Also, look at her. She is so pretty.

My boy-crush is probably Joseph Gordon Levitt. 500 Days of Summer is one of my favourite movies, and he is just really… cute.

What’s your favourite movie genre?

Recently I have fallen in love with all Disney live-action movies, and musicals. I still haven’t gotten over The Greatest Showman soundtrack or The Beauty and the Beast. I also like historical dramas.

Do you have a song that always cheers you up?

Well, talking about the Greatest Showman soundtrack 😂 😂 I really love From Now On. It cheers me up if I’m feeling down because of how the song develops; it starts low and blue and then builds up to this super catchy part that always gets me dancing.

What made you start blogging?

Ah, I kind of accidentally answered this question in my emotional monologue at the beginning of the blog post. I love sharing my love of books with like-minded people, and most of all I love making new friends. I’m going to cry again, oh no, here it comes 😭

Are you an adrenaline junkie?

No, not really. While I have paid more attention lately in trying to actively do things I want to do despite of being afraid to do them, I wouldn’t do scary things simply for the sake of an adrenaline rush. But I like to do things to achieve an endorphine and endocannabinoid rush, like going for a long run at a high pace or climbing a mountain to get a sense of elation.

Do you have a bucket list?

I don’t 😊 I like to think of goals in my life a bit differently. I have short-term goals like don’t-die-in-writing-my-masters-thesis and read-&-blog-&-exercise, long-term goals like run a half-marathon and start and finish a PhD, and crazy long-term goals like learn about owning a business and start my own bookshop. I think bucket lists wouldn’t work for me as I change my mind so often about where I want to travel and whether or not I want to bungee jump. 🤔 I have a kind of reading bucket list though which includes a bunch of intimidating tomes and classics.

Do you find other peoples opinion of you important?

I’m an anxious mess so mmmm

If you could ask me anything, what would you want to know?

Bibi, I want to know what you are super passionate about! Anything that makes you inspired, fascinated, and awestruck. Something that never fails to fill you with joy 🤩

What question do you wish I had asked you, and what’s the answer to said question?

AH what a tough question Bibi!! 😱

Hmmm I think I wish you had asked me about what I’m working on because I’m in love with my research topics and I want all the world to hear about them. (Although I do need to point out that what I love are my topics, they are my little pieces of inspiration and they bring me loads of joy, but I’m not super keen on writing my thesis.)

Me when I finish that cursed thing in July

My masters research is on electronic, academic reading strategies. I have undergraduate students read their course materials on an e-reader that tracks their reading process. I then analyse the data and try to find patterns in it in relation to the students’ motivation and grades. It’s a first ever investigation of how students read their academic materials in everyday life and I’m super proud of it!

What I’m even more proud of, is my future PhD research. I will be studying recreational reading behaviour of adults! I will look for participants to read an entire novel on the e-reader while their behaviour is tracked. I’ll be able to say a lot about how reading fits into avid readers’ everyday life after my studies! (We can finally uncover what super-powers we readers, have)

My Questions to you:

  1. Who is your absolute favourite book character?
  2. What is your favourite fruit?
  3. You just walked into a lovely coffee shop, what is your order?
  4. Which house-chore do you despise and which one is your fave?
  5. Book shopping in store or online?
  6. What is your Hogwarts house?
  7. Who is your favourite author?
  8. What would your dream holiday be like?
  9. What is the worst book you have ever read, and why?
  10. What is your favourite book cover and why?
  11. Which book would you like to have a movie/series adaptation of?

I nominate:

Absolutely no pressure to do the tag if you don’t want to 🥰

  1. Thank you for the tag! I also loved your post and on your blogging anniversary I would like to say that I’m grateful to have found your blog. Also, I think your research is fantastic – I work at a university and haven’t seen many more interesting research projects than yours!

  2. Happy Blogiversary hun ❤ I can't believe it's been a year already, time just flies by doesn't it?

I'm 32 and have been with my boyfriend for 6 years and we have NO kids and NO plans of having them, so I feel your pain when people ask when you're going to start your family. Especially because for some unknown reason people seems to think it's okay to be condescending and say stuff like "you'll change your mind" or "you're going to regret that". I mean purple aren't everyone's favourite colour, so what makes people think everyone wants kids? And more importantly, that it's okay to not respect the answer? I would never dream of telling my friends "you're going to regret that" when they're heavily pregnant in the 8th month. To me it's just plain rude. I've known since I was 15 kids wasn't for me, so I think I know what I'm talking about 😛

    Ha ha alright, rant over!!

So what makes me super passionate… the writing community! Authors, bloggers, journalists… you name it. The fact that they (we I guess?) are creating things, by putting words on a blank document is super inspiring to me. I'm very passionate about the books I love, as they all create some kind of emotional reaction within me. And I'm in awe of so many authors, who have enough creativity, imagination and drive to create my favourite books and characters. When I sit down and really think about it… I'm awestruck. I mean to think about Percy Jackson at some point being a stray thought in Rick Riordan's mind…. yeah that just about blows my mind 😀

    • Thank you Bibi 🥰 It’s really odd how fast a year went by! I was planning to do something for the first blog-versary at Christmas and then it was suddenly May already 😱

I’m so happy that you know what I’m talking about (although it’s not at all cool that you have gone through the same, annoying stuff too 😕). I feel like some people seem to expect that women have to have kids or they might not be women at all. This mentality makes me absolutely boil with rage. I have never really wanted to have kids either and I still find myself justifying my opinions to others at least once every 2 months 😅 I’m always weirded out by the questioning as well, what if I happened to be unable to have children? then those conversations could be actually painful (and not just annoying like they are to me personally). I happen to be pretty much surrounded by people who want to have children. I have nothing against that but I feel like it’s really nice to find someone who understands how difficult it can be to go against society’s customs. So thank you so much for commenting and sharing your feelings on it, I really appreciate it 😊

Also, I love that you’re passionate about the process of creating things 🤩 You made me think about it as well, and it is so fascinating that some authors can create whole worlds out of a single spark of inspiration! Love that you shared, your comment really brightened my day 🥰

      • You’re 100% right about how it feels like people just have the standard idea that of course women want children. So often I hear my friends with kids reminiscing about the days they could spend money on clothes, shoes, pampering etc. I love that I don’t have to buy nappies, dummies and baby clothes. That I can go away on a spa weekend if I want to! And yet when I do, there’s always someone there again with the loaded comments like “I can’t just spend money like that” or “yes, it’s nice not to have responsibility”. Each time it makes me wonder why women who don’t want children are being treated like enemy number 1.
It’s 2019 – a woman can be Prime Minister and President, but apparently choosing not to have kids is too far fetched 😛

Happy to help brighten your day and to find a fellow sufferer on the no kids thing 😉 ❤

  3. Congratulations to your one year blogversary – yay! Hope it’s the first of many!

Oh I feel you on the children thing. I am the proud mum of a cute furbaby black cat and that’s all the mothering I want to do! I got married last August and even though I’ve been questioned about the occupancy status of my uterus for *years* it’s really stepped up a gear since having gotten married.

The thing is I have no drive to have children. Never have and I’m guessing never will as I’m 34 now and still feel the same way about it. I really like my life and lifestyle and relationship with my husband. We’re so happy and I just don’t want anything to change that. People say having a baby will make me give my life meaning but I find that beyond offensive. I love when my friends (who want children) have children. I’m pleased as punch for them and I love a lot of their children because they give me great joy. I just want to be the ‘cool pseudo aunt,’ I don’t want to parent them.

It’s so demeaning to be constantly asked and now I get borderline rage filled when questioned so that I’m almost always on the defensive! At least if I can scare people they might stop asking!!

    • Yay thank you so much 😍

Oooh I’m the same, as soon as I got married the child-questions became even more frequent than before. I also totally agree on the ‘children give your life meaning’ -point! Our lives already have a lot of meaning! Also, in my opinion, having children to find meaning in life sounds quite sad. What happens when the kids grow up, does that person’s life lack meaning again?

I’m also on the defensive a lot. I can go from relaxed to a full-on angry if this issue comes up. Usually I’m so tired of being asked that I find it difficult to discuss about the issue even though I feel like explaining might help the person asking to understand.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this Gerry!! I don’t know anyone in my vicinity who doesn’t want children so I usually feel like I’m fighting alone against everyone 😅 It helps a lot to hear that others are going through the same thing.

      • I always say to people that if they have children then those children should be the most important thing in their world but they can’t expect everyone’s worldview as seeing having children as important.

I’ve gotten into some right arguments with people because this is such an issue I get argumentative about. I’ve tried calm and rationale explanations but then I get rebuttals. Not that I or you should need to explain because saying, ‘I don’t want them, it’s personal choice’ should be sufficient but apparently it isn’t so I try to take the high ground. I mean that quickly becomes the incredibly low ground when I start frothing at the mouth….

I’m only defensive because it happens a lot!

I actually really enjoy meeting other people who don’t want children because I feel like they’re on a path that I can relate to and that I can travel down with. I love my friends who have children and love their children but there’s a lot I can’t relate when we’re together and they talk about schools or childbirth stories or teething issues. I love hearing their stories but I’m very much an observer and not a participant and then when they ask me what I’m up to it feels a bit embarrassing to say ‘oh well my cat did this funny thing.’ And that’s not on them at all because they are great and genuinely love hearing about my silly crazy cat lady tales but I think it’s society and the way we’ve been socialised to believe parenting is the end of the line that makes me feel that way!

I do feel like my cat is a little like a toddler though so I can join in with bathroom stories. But she’s cuter though, waaaay cuter.

      • (Sorry I’m way late in replying to comments 😅 Like two months 🙈 )

I 100% agree with you! I get super argumentative about this issue and could fight anyone who comes at me with the ‘you’re not a woman if you don’t have kids’ or something as absurd as that. I also find it easier to connect with people who don’t want kids, but sadly I don’t have many people like that in my everyday life. I think that children should be a big part of a parent’s life so it makes sense that parents talk about their kids often, but I easily find it difficult to relate 🤔 I especially hate child birth stories!! It seems like some women see it as their responsibility to tell me all the gruesome bits because of cooourse I want children and will have them 🤦‍♀️

I also want a cat! Pets definitely count as furry babies. Hahah I would love to reply to all the kid talk with ‘ah I already have one’ and then proceed to show pictures of my cat 😍

      • Ah don’t worry at all! You’ve had a busy time of it at the moment from the sounds of things! Honestly I’m gaining a reputation as an argumentative woman but I actually don’t mind that at all! 😛 I’m constantly referring to my cat as my ‘baby’ and I swear I see people look at me like I’m a crazy cat lady when I start showing the 300+ photos I have of her!

  4. Happy blogiversary and thanks for the tag 🙂

Man, i totally understand your gear grinding with that child question. I used to get that a lot and would always get super pissed off. I don’t think anyone’s child status is anyone’s business or a topic to comment on. I would never ask anyone, unless they bring up the topic but even then, i would never ever tell anyone they will change their minds.
I heard that a lot, and made me want to explode all the time. Even if i were to change my mind, what’s that to do with them? :/

    • Yay Thank you Norrie 😍

So glad to hear that I’m not alone with this issue 😕 I’m also annoyed that if I end up changing my mind on this, then those who bothered me about this for so long might think they were victorious in their pestering 😅 It kind of feels like that the questioning demeans my opinion of not-wanting-children and also robs me from the free will of making my own decision on it.

  6. Such a 💗heartfelt💘 post, Pauliina!!! I didn’t know just how much blogging means to you until now 😢 I am truly glad that you chose to join this community! My family and friends don’t share the same obsession for books either, so it makes me feel alone, too! Like I’m not normal to gush over it so much, although it’s not their fault either. It’s such a wonderful thing to have communities who share similar interests. Gosh, I’m getting emotional now, my eyes are legit glistening 😂 I want to make more meaningful connections with some of the bloggers I know but there’s only so much time! I kind of have different bloggers I go to gush about certain subjects and books 😁

Thank you oh-so-much for tagging me, I feel honored! I’ve done a Liebster Award before but the great thing about this one is that its’ always different cuz of the questions. I’m gonna draft it asap!

    1) Omg, I just don’t get why people would even say the ‘Not yet’ part, it’s so presumptious and arrogant.

    2) I love milk coffee and milk tea! Drip coffee is a bit diluted for me but I like having it when I want black coffee(with sugar, of course 😜) And urgh, that gingerbread cocktail story!! I hate when that happens! It’s like some Alice in Wonderland or fairytale where you accidentally stumble upon a secret door and you have a GLORIOUS time and then you never find that door again! I feel like it wasn’t Alice but some other story where this happened…For me, I can’t seem to find one particular Arabic song that my family & I used to listen to on our intercity ‘roadtrips'(it was only a 2 hour drive 😂 each way), and this perfume I had a sample-sized bottle of that I’m positive was Cool Water for women but whenever I come across it nowadays it doesn’t smell right. Gah!

    3) Joseph Gordon-Levitt!!! He’s underrated!! 😍 Have you watched him in Inception yet??

    4) I want to watch The Greatest Showman. I’ve heard some of the songs on youtube and they’re magnificent! So much emotion!

    5) That was one of the ones I’ve heard and I liked it a lot!

    6) loll, I also accidentally ‘answered’ this in the beginning of this comment 😜😂

    7) loll, I’ve never heard of ‘endocannabinoid rush’ before! I enjoy cycling, walking and badminton. Never tried mountain climbing though. I’d have to get more fit before I do that 😁

    8) Oooooh, a bookstore! I’d like to have one or work in one someday!

    9) Aww girll, I think it’s totally understandable, especially with close ones, but I really hope you do draw a line ☺ From personal experience, I don’t like to see people being controlled by other ppl’s opinions.

    11) Your PhD research sounds like FUN!! I’d love love to know the results when you complete it!

    • (Sorry I’m awkwardly late in comments 😆)
Aw it’s really difficult to find people in real life who are as into reading & books, it’s odd how such an independent hobby could really be made even better with same minded people 😊

And OMG I LOVE that you drafted your responses here, this is going to be so much fun 😍

Hahah you’re absolutely right about the Alice in the Wonderland theory! Sometimes we just stumble to a secret door and have a fabulous time, never to find that same place again. I have had a similar thing with a song before! It’s the worst when you start forgetting the lyrics and everything and only have a faint beat in your head that doesn’t match with anything 😵

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is definitely underrated!! GAH I didn’t know that he is in Inception! I have only seen some parts of that movie, now I have to sit down and watch the entire thing 😍

I have to admit that the songs are definitely the best part of the Greatest Showman movie, but it’s still such a feel good film, it never fails to cheer me up – so highly recommended nevertheless!

I love badminton (but I’m unbelievably bad at it)! I more like hike mountains, I wouldn’t climb them with hooks and ropes and stuff 😅 that sounds way too extreme! Scotland has loads of mountains that don’t have many cliffs but more like slow upward slopes. Takes a long time to walk up but worth it in the end!

😱😱 YOU CAN 100000% COME WORK IN MY FUTURE BOOKSHOP

yay, I’ll probably be constantly updating my PhD process here in the blog too. It’s way too big and scary a thing to not share 😁 Terrified of starting it next month!!

Giirl, I hope you’re doing great! sorry that I took so long to respond, I’m definitely trying to get better at balancing blog & being lazy & university 😂 You know we should buddy read something together! that would be fun!
