Ahoy the time of pumpkin spiced lattes and warm sweaters. Although warm sweaters are an every-season thing here in Scotland.
Some of my most anticipated releases of the entire year come out in fall 2018, but only after I started browsing the new releases I realised that there are loads of amazing ones coming at us this autumn! So go ahead and get a cup of tea and settle into a nice, comfortable position because we have got a wonderful but beastly long list ahead of us. I want to say something short about each one but I’ll keep descriptions to the minimum or this post will never end! Click on the title for the Goodreads page.
September
Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake
#3 in Three Dark Crowns series
4th September 2018, YA fantasy
To start off the list is Two Dark Reigns, which I absolutely cannot wait! I love the Three Dark Crowns series and I’ll hopefully find time to read the two novellas, Young Queens and Oracle Queen, before this beauty comes out. I love the characters, I love the suspense, I love this cover. AAAAAAAh.
When Elephants Fly by Nancy Richardson Fischer
4th September 2018, YA contemporary
From the synopsis I gather that When Elephants Fly is about mental health and the stigma surrounding it. The main character obsessively worries about having a mental illness after a traumatic experience with her mother who has paranoid schizophrenia. A difficult topic, and it could go all wrong but it could also be really good. We shall see!
Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton
18th September 2018, YA fantasy
Strange Grace is a story of a village that has to sacrifice a young man to the Devil’s Forest every Slaughter Moon. I don’t know what most of that means but sounds dramatic, suspensful and deliciously dark. I’m also currently reading The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton and I’ll be very hyped for this one if I end up loving Innis Lear.
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
25th September 2018, Adult contemporary
For some reason I have never fully confessed my love for Liane Moriarty. I have read like four of her books and all of them have been relatable, sweet and unputdownable. Now I’m coming out of my Moriarty Closet and tell the world that I’m pretty excited that there will be a new one that sounds as relatable and fun as all of her previous books.
October
Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor
#2 in Strange the Dreamer series
2nd October 2018, Fantasy
Finally finally finally the day has come when I can list this glorious book in my next season’s most anticipated list. The release date is coming closer!! I am a weak soul when it comes to Strange the Dreamer and I literally have tears in my eyes when I think of the day when I’ll have this book in my hands.
Damsel by Elana K. Arnold
2nd October 2018, YA fantasy
I have had my eye on this dark and twisted feminist story since February. It is a tale of dragons and princes and damsels in distress – or is it? The damsel might not be such a damsel after all. I’m even more excited now that the ARC reviews have started rolling in; there is a lot of controversy! It seems that this dark tale is so twisted that not everyone likes it anymore, how interesting.
The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox
2nd October 2018, Historical fiction with some paranormal fantasy
This one is about Massachusetts in 1821 and a woman who is a witch. But she doesn’t know it yet herself. And a witch is a dangerous thing to be in 1821. I love historical fiction centered around witches. It is a great opportunity for the author to bring in some kickass females with strong feminist agendas. I hope this one makes good use of that opportunity!
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
2nd October 2018, YA fantasy
Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep.
He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.
Hello I’m already sold, I don’t even know what it is about but I’m convinced that Sawkill Girls will be creepy and amazing. Perfect October read!
Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa
2nd October 2018, YA fantasy
Shadow of the Fox is a fantasy inspired by Japanese mythology. I’m very interested in Japanese culture and especially its mythology, and thus this is a very anticipated release. I’m also hoping to make my husband read this, he is fluent in Japanese and lived in Japan for 2.5 years! He can let me know if the book stayed true to its inspiration or if it was a victim to westernization.
A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult
2nd October 2018, Adult contemporary
I haven’t read the widely popular My Sister’s Keeper by the same author but I’m meaning to. The synopsis of A Spark of Light made me shiver and I really want to read it. It’s about a gunman who charges into a reproductive health services clinic and Hugh McElroy whose 15-year-old daughter happens to be in there at the time.
The Royal Runaway by Lindsay Emory
9th October 2018, Adult romance
The Royal Runaway sounds like something light-hearted and funny to be read when university stress tries to smother the life out of me. It’s about Princess Theodora Isabella Victoria of Drieden of the Royal House Laurent (THAT NAME, hilarious 😂) who is so over the whole princess thing. Instead she focuses on trying to figure out why her fiance left her at the altar four months earlier.
Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich
9th October 2018, YA contemporary
Dear Evan Hansen is a broadway musical of which soundtrack has gone viral. I love it too, and if you haven’t listened to it yet, maybe you should because it’s pretty adorable. Although I have listened to the soundtrack multiple times, I would like to know what’s actually going on and the show’s creators very politely just saved me the trip to New York by writing a book. Thanks guys, you’re golden.
The Devil’s Thief by Lisa Maxwell
#2 in the Last Magician series
9th October 2018, YA fantasy/historical fiction
Are you ever really excited for a sequel even though you haven’t read the first book in the series? For some reason I do that pretty often. Because I’m so excited for this, I’m trying to read the Last Magician now to see whether any of that excitement is founded. Fingers crossed!
Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore
9th October 2018, YA Magical realism
Blanca and Roja are sisters who are caught in an old curse: there will be a time for a game in which only one sister will be left a girl and the other will be trapped in the body of a swan. The premise seems very original, and my optimistic brain is expecting this to be a beautiful feministic tale of sisterhood and rivalry.
Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami
9th October 2018, Literary fiction
I LOVED 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and I have sky-high expectations for Killing Commendatore. Those expectations are indeed so majestetic that I’ll wait until it has been published and some reviews start rolling in before I pick it up. I’m so scared of being disappointed by Murakami (who has never disappointed me)!
The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth
23rd October 2018, YA fantasy
Weymouth’s debut sounds like a case-story of one of the kids in Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. It’s about sisters who accidentally pop into a magical land called Woodlands from the midst of a crisis in London. One day they pop out of that world as unexpectantly. How do the sisters deal with their world that hasn’t changed when they themselves have?
November
Year of Wonder: Classical Music to Enjoy Day by Day by Clemency Burton-Hill
6th November 2018, Nonfiction, music
I love classical music but I understand pretty much nothing about it. This nonfiction book includes a classical piece for everyday of the year and descriptions of that piece. If it’s well and engagingly written, it could be the perfect way for me to learn a bit more about music.
Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean
6th November 2018, YA fantasy
MmMh another fantasy that seems to be inspired by Japanese culture. A competition is held in Honoku and anyone who is not an enslaved, supernatural monster can take part (really). The winner gets to marry a prince and to win one has to survive a palace’s seasonal rooms. Mari wants to take part but she most certainly is a terrifying monster. I’m actually into this, why do I make it sound weird 😂
Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
6th October 2018, YA fantasy
If you’re active in the bookish social media, you have probably noted the hype around Girls of Paper and Fire. Hype often makes me uncertain of books but this piece of the synopsis got me hooked: Each year, eight girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. But this year, there’s a ninth girl. And instead of paper, she’s made of fire.
This Splintered Silence by Kayla Olson
13th November 2018, Sci-fi
This Splintered Silence sounds to me like a mash-up between the Illuminae Files series and Becky Chambers’ Wayfarer series, both of which I love. It’s about Lindley who has become the captain of a space station after everyone else in the crew has died of a deadly virus.
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
13th November 2018, Adult fantasy
India -inspired fantasy about outcasts persecuted for their magical powers. To be honest, there are quite a few fantasies inspired by India in my TBR (Wrath & the Dawn, City of Brass…) that I can’t wait to pick up. Nevertheless, Empire of Sands sounds so delicious that it has to join in. Maybe I can go on a magical India -binge next fall.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
13th November 2018, Memoir
I was so excited when I first heard of this memoir in April. I’m very intrigued to find out more about Michelle Obama and I really hope that she will narrate the audiobook by herself. Usually I have trouble with memoirs by famous/political people, but because Michelle is amazing with words (her speeches, ah-maizing) I’m confident that this will be a great read.
Outrun the Wind by Elizabeth Tammi
27th November, YA fantasy
The Huntresses of Artemis must obey two rules: never disobey the goddess, and never fall in love.
Outrun the Wind doesn’t look like it will be mind-blowing fantasy but it does look like an empowering story with many twists and turns. I’m happy to say that I already have an arc of this and I can’t wait to get reading!
Well hello, did you survive all the way to the end of my very long list of new releases? I promise that I didn’t just list everything that will be released in the next three months, these genuinely are my most anticipated new releases! I’m just very interested in everything, hah. It’ll be a great reading season!
Did you spot any books that you are highly anticipating? Which ones are on your list? Did you find any new ones to add to your tbr? Tell me in the comments below as I would love to know!
Thank you so much for reading!

Fab list! There are some exciting reads coming out later this year. I’m looking forward to When Elephants Fly and Girls of Paper and Fire the most, I think. And I’ve pretty much added this entire list to my TBR!

I’m excited for so many of these and there are a few I haven’t heard of before! The Witch of Willow Hall for one sounds AMAZING. And I’m currently reading through When Elephants Fly and I’m very impressed with the way schizophrenia gets addressed. 🙂

Yay I’m so happy that you found something new! And now I’m REALLY excited for When Elephants Fly!! I was pretty worried that the schizophrenia would be stereotyped but it sounds like it’ll have some great rep 😊
